Aave OI Surges 24.2% to $376M as Futures Positioning Rebuilds

The Aave derivatives market has added 24.2% in open interest over 24 hours to about $376.0M, while the token price gained 12.5% to $166.24. That is a powerful expansion, but the structure is not a clean long-side confirmation: the average funding reading is negative, takers are net short on the venue reported, and short liquidations have dominated the latest windows.
Recent market coverage has connected Aave's advance with broader DeFi strength and possible tokenized-equity use cases, while also discussing future changes to the token's economics.
Binance leads the OI expansion
The exchange breakdown shows where the surge is concentrated. Binance carries $82.7M of AAVE open interest, equal to 22.0% of the tracked total, and its OI rose 37.6% over 24 hours. Bybit is close behind with $72.4M and a 19.3% share after a 21.7% increase. Bitget holds $33.2M, or 8.8%, with a more moderate 14.8% gain.
OKX contributes $20.8M and 5.5% of the total after a 26.7% daily increase, although its four-hour change is negative at 2.2%. Bybit also declined 0.8% over four hours, while Binance still added 0.7%. That contrast matters: the daily build is broad, but the most recent positioning is already cooling on several large venues. Binance's larger share and stronger daily acceleration make it the key confirmation market, while the pullback at OKX and Bybit warns against treating the aggregate increase as uniformly fresh leverage.
Funding is positive on major venues, not everywhere
The funding rate picture is unusually dispersed. Binance, Bitget, Gate, BitMEX and several other venues show 0.010%, while Bybit is at 0.009% and OKX also reports 0.010%. That mild positive pricing suggests longs are paying on the largest visible markets, consistent with a crowded upside chase after the price advance.
Yet the broader venue set includes sharply negative readings: Bitfinex is at -0.019%, Hyperliquid at -0.002%, and CoinEx at -0.429%. The divergence means leverage is not synchronized. A squeeze can continue where shorts remain positioned, but positive funding on the biggest books also raises the cost of holding late longs. The combination favors a momentum market with a fragile center rather than a uniformly bullish derivatives regime.
Liquidations and positioning disagree
The liquidation windows show clear short-side pressure. Over 24 hours, total liquidations reached $2.9M, with $2.2M from shorts versus $656.8K from longs. Across 12 hours, shorts accounted for $778.7K against $520.8K of long liquidations. The latest four-hour window was even more asymmetric: $40.7K in shorts and only $3.3K in longs.
Several large prints map the battlefield. A Binance long liquidation was recorded at $169.00 for $97.4K, while short liquidations appeared at $174.97 for $96.9K and $168.29 for $91.2K. Bybit also shows short liquidations at $176.50 worth $88.3K and at $164.24 worth $74.5K. The price path is therefore squeezing shorts while still punishing late longs around the current range.
Positioning data reinforces that split. Account data show 60.5% longs overall, with Binance at 62.6%, Bybit at 60.3% and Bitget at 80.8%. OKX is nearly balanced at 49.8% longs. But the available taker reading is short-heavy: Binance has 45.8% long takers and 54.2% short takers, while Gate is also slightly short at 49.4% long and 50.6% short. Passive accounts are leaning long, but active flow is selling into the move. That is consistent with short liquidations and suggests the OI surge is being met by aggressive two-way trading rather than one-sided conviction.
Verdict
The immediate bias remains constructive while AAVE holds $164.24 and total OI stays near or above $376.0M. A push through $169.00 would strengthen the continuation case, while $174.97 and $176.50 are the next visible short-liquidation pressure points from the recorded clusters. The view is invalidated if price loses $164.24 while OI contracts materially below $376.0M, showing that the expansion was distribution rather than durable accumulation.
