Aave Open Interest Climbs 18.1% as $362.98M Meets a Price Test

Aave is trading at $162.13 after a 9.0% daily advance, but the more important derivatives signal is leverage expansion: aggregate open interest stands at $361.70M, up 18.1% over 24 hours, while spot and derivatives activity together point to a market testing whether the move can extend toward the liquidation cluster above the current price. Recent market commentary has focused on stronger DeFi momentum, tokenized-asset ambitions and possible tokenomics changes, but the immediate test is being set by positioning rather than narrative.

OI expansion is broad, but momentum has cooled

Binance holds the largest AAVE open-interest share at 22.0%, or $79.57M, after a 30.5% 24-hour increase. Bybit follows with 19.5%, or $70.53M, up 17.0%, while Bitget contributes 8.9%, or $32.31M, after a 10.8% rise. OKX is smaller at 5.4%, or $19.66M, yet its OI is still 20.0% higher than 24 hours ago. This is a meaningful cross-venue build rather than a single-exchange anomaly.

However, every major venue in the leading group shows negative four-hour change: Binance is down 2.5%, Bybit 2.6%, Bitget 2.2% and OKX 6.8%. That combination matters for a breakout setup. The daily expansion confirms that leverage entered during the rally, while the shorter window suggests some exposure is already being reduced near $162.13. The ticker’s total OI is $362.98M, and its one-hour change is negative 3.3%, reinforcing the view that the market is digesting the move instead of accelerating cleanly.

Funding is positive, but not uniformly crowded

The funding rate map is mostly positive. Binance, Bybit, OKX, Bitget and several other venues show 0.01%, while Coinbase is at 0.0039% and Backpack at 0.00125%. That indicates longs are paying across the most liquid venues, but the premium is not extreme on the main exchanges. The notable exception is CoinEx at -0.4295%, with CryptomCom at -0.0081% and Hyperliquid at -0.0004%, showing that short-side pressure remains visible in parts of the market.

The cross-venue split makes the average funding reading less decisive than the headline price gain. Positive funding supports the idea that long exposure is present, yet the negative pockets and falling four-hour OI argue against treating the move as a one-way leverage chase. A breakout would be more credible if price advances while OI stabilizes above $361.70M rather than simply rebuilding after short-term deleveraging.

Liquidations and positioning reveal a two-sided trap

Over 24 hours, liquidations reached $2.99M: $2.20M came from shorts and $794.93K from longs. The imbalance favors a short squeeze, consistent with the 9.0% price rise. Yet the shorter windows are different. In the latest hour, long liquidations totaled $138.17K against only $396.84 of shorts; over four hours, longs lost $138.81K while shorts lost $27.68K. Twelve-hour figures remain mixed, with $654.61K in long liquidations and $302.79K in short liquidations.

The largest recorded levels frame the next price test. A long liquidation appeared at $169.00 for $97.36K, while short liquidations were recorded at $168.29 for $91.18K, $174.97 for $96.90K and $176.50 for $88.25K. These levels describe a crowded zone above the market, but the $164.24 short liquidation level also shows that a pullback can trigger additional two-way volatility.

Positioning confirms the conflict. Account data is long-biased on Binance at 63.3% and Bybit at 61.2%, while Bitget is heavily skewed at 80.8% long. OKX is balanced at 50.0%, and Gate is nearly even at 49.9%. Yet active Binance takers are 69.6% short, versus only 30.4% long; Gate takers show the opposite, at 71.3% long. This account-versus-flow divergence means passive positioning expects upside, while the most active Binance flow is selling into the move.

Verdict: AAVE has a constructive breakout setup above $162.13, but the confirmation zone is $169.00 and then $174.97, with OI needing to hold around $361.70M rather than fade further. The view is invalidated if price loses $164.24 and aggregate OI breaks below $361.70M while short liquidations fail to expand.
