Altseason Index Rebounds to 41 as Fear & Greed Drops to 63

The altseason index bounced to 41 on Tuesday after touching 31 the day before, while the crypto fear and greed gauge cooled to 63 from 69. The two indicators moved in opposite directions for a second straight day, and that split is worth reading carefully.
Altseason index snaps back 10 points in 24 hours
The index, which counts how many of the top 49 coins are outperforming BTC over 90 days, sat at 45 on Aug 28, slid to 39 on Aug 30, and printed 31 on Sep 1, its lowest reading of the past month. On Sep 2 it recovered to 41, with 20 of 49 coins beating BTC. The gauge is still in neutral territory, so this is a rebound, not a regime change. BTC itself is up 20.8% over 90 days, which sets a high bar for altcoins to clear.
Fear and greed cools but stays in greed
The sentiment gauge lost 6 points to 63, its softest print since Aug 26. The path over the past week: 73 on Aug 28, 68 on Aug 29, 69 through Aug 30-31, now 63. Greed is easing, but the market has not tipped into fear. A reading above 60 still describes a crowd that leans bullish, which historically makes downside moves sharp when leverage is heavy.
Divergence: alt breadth up, big-cap sentiment down
BTC traded near $77,215 at the snapshot, down 1.6% on the day, with ETH at $2,409, down 2.3%. Over the past 24 hours, liquidations totaled $294M and longs paid 81% of that, so leveraged bulls have been taking hits while spot alts hold up better. When a long flush and an altseason bounce happen at the same time, it usually means capital is rotating out of crowded BTC and ETH leverage into smaller names rather than leaving the market.
What to watch next
Two levels decide the near term. If the altseason index holds above 40 while fear and greed stays in the 55-65 band, rotation can continue and pullback dips in alts may get bought. If BTC breaks the $76.4K low of this range, the breadth rebound would likely fade quickly, because sentiment gauges lag price. Funding rates on Binance and OKX are close to zero for most majors, so there is room for leverage to rebuild in either direction.
