Altseason Index Slips to 50 as BTC's $80K Push Drains Alts

Altseason index gives back its bounce

The altseason index fell to 50 on Aug 24, back to the neutral line, after touching 56 the day before. The gauge counts how many of the top 50 coins beat BTC over 90 days, and right now it is 25 out of 50, a perfect split. On Aug 13-14 it sat at 65, then bled lower: 63, 61, 57, 50, a weak recovery to 56, and now 50 again. Every attempt to reclaim 60 has failed since Aug 17. BTC itself is up 3.85% over the 90-day window, so the index at 50 means altcoins as a group are not outperforming anymore, they are just matching or lagging.

Alts bleed while BTC holds $78.9K

The price action over the past 24 hours shows who is paying. BTC trades at $78,950, up 2.15%, after testing $79,975 and failing to hold above $80K. ETH sits at $2,475, up 1.2%. The alt side looks different. ZEC dropped 6.9% to $812.6 after printing a $874 high, giving back part of the squeeze run that made it the leader on Aug 24. HYPE fell 4.4% to $77.4 from an $83.5 high. TRUMP led the losers at minus 10%, down to $2.446. DOGE lost 3.8%. These are the same names that carried the recent alt rally, and they are the ones getting sold now.

The liquidation split shows a two-tier market

Total liquidations reached $459M in the last 24 hours, with shorts paying 55.7% of that, about $255.5M against $203.5M from longs. But the split inside is the real story. BTC and ETH liquidations are 64% short on both coins, $189M and $134.4M respectively, a classic squeeze pattern in the majors. Alt coins flipped the other way: HYPE is 71% long, TRUMP 74% long, DOGE 86% long, VELVET 83% long. Leverage longs in alts are being flushed out at the same time short sellers in BTC and ETH are getting run over. That is not rotation into altcoins, that is capital consolidating into BTC and ETH while alt leverage gets cut.

What neutral actually means for positioning

An altseason reading of 50 does not scream bearish, but it does not support chasing alt momentum either. The failed bounces at 52, 54 and 56 tell you the rotation narrative has stalled repeatedly. For a real altseason to resume, the index needs to hold above 60 with breadth, meaning more than 30 of the top 50 coins beating BTC, not a one-day spike. Until that happens, treat alt rallies as counter-trend moves. The watch list is simple: ZEC and HYPE longs already paid, watch whether TRUMP and DOGE follow; and keep an eye on BTC at $80K, because if that rejection deepens, alt longs are the first to get cut again.
