ATOM OI +5.7% to $62.5M as Funding Turns Negative

ATOM Open Interest Rises 5.7% to $62.5M

Cosmos's ATOM added open interest through Tuesday even as its price sat still. Aggregate OI across major venues climbed 5.65% in 24 hours to $62.5M, with Binance adding 3.6% and Hyperliquid up 17.3%. KuCoin and MEXC posted the biggest relative moves at +21.5% and +19.8%, both from a smaller base. The build looks deliberate: no big liquidations, no price spike, just fresh positions coming in on both sides.

Funding Flipped Negative on the Top Three Venues

The interesting part is where the new leverage sits. Funding on Binance is -0.0119%, OKX -0.0190% and Bybit -0.0205%, meaning shorts are paying longs to hold their positions. That is the opposite of what a normal rally looks like. ATOM's 24h change is -1.5% at $1.536, with a high of $1.578 and a low near $1.502 on Binance and OKX. The market is not going anywhere, yet someone keeps adding short-side exposure into the flat tape.

Why Negative Funding With Rising OI Matters

When open interest climbs and funding stays negative, the setup is a crowded short rather than a leveraged chase. ATOM has been rangebound between roughly $1.50 and $1.58 for the session, and the liquidation tape is quiet: the coin does not appear in the top single-order liquidation list at all, and 24h liquidations across all venues are small. That means the short build has not been tested. If price breaks the top of the range, those shorts are the fuel for a squeeze; if it breaks down, the longs that entered alongside them take the hit. The direction is not obvious, but the leverage is now stacked on one side.

What to Watch Next

The key level is the $1.578 high from this window. ATOM funding has been negative at Gate (-0.0276%) and Coinex as well, while Bitget holds the only positive print at +0.01%. A push above $1.58 with OI still rising would force short covering and likely push funding back toward zero. A rejection below $1.50, on the other hand, would validate the shorts and could unwind the long side that came in with the OI build. Either way the position buildup is now the story, not the price action itself.
