ATOM OI +8.1%: MEXC Adds 128% as Funding Turns Negative

ATOM Flat at $1.51 While Open Interest Rises 8.1%

ATOM is trading at $1.507 on Binance and $1.508 on OKX, barely changed over the past 24 hours after touching a high of $1.579 and a low of $1.475. The flat tape masks a busy session underneath: total open interest across derivative venues climbed 8.1% to $64.9 million in the same window.

That gap between a quiet spot price and a growing derivatives book is the story here. ATOM's OI-to-price move means new leverage entered the market without pushing the price anywhere, which usually points to positioning rather than conviction about direction.

MEXC OI Jumps 128% as Binance, OKX, Bybit Trim

The build is not evenly spread. MEXC grew its ATOM open interest by 128% in 24 hours to $11.7 million, lifting its share to roughly 18% of the total book. By contrast, Binance edged down 0.7% to $15.8 million, OKX shed 6.6% to $4.0 million, and Bybit cut 6.5% to $13.4 million.

A single venue absorbing that much new size while the majors pull back is a concentration shift worth watching. MEXC now holds almost as much ATOM exposure as Bybit, and the two have diverged sharply in their 24-hour flows.

Negative Funding Means Shorts Pay, but Price Holds

Funding rates across ATOM venues have flipped negative: Binance sits at -0.0162%, OKX at -0.0199%, and MEXC at -0.0157%. Negative funding means short positions pay longs to stay, a setup that normally accompanies a falling price or heavy short-side crowding.

ATOM has not fallen. Instead, the negative funding is paired with rising open interest, which reads like shorts leaning in and getting little price reward, or new longs entering against a skeptical crowd. Either way, the cost of holding a short is rising while the spot market refuses to break down.

What to Watch on ATOM Next

The immediate signal is the MEXC book. A 128% single-session OI jump can unwind just as fast as it builds, and when it does, the direction of those positions decides whether ATOM breaks above $1.58 or gives back toward $1.47. Funding at -0.016% still favors longs in the carry sense, but only if the spot tape cooperates.

For traders, the clean read is simple: ATOM derivatives are repricing even though the coin is not. Watch the MEXC position count over the next 24 hours; if that book flattens while Binance funding turns positive again, the squeeze narrative fades. If it keeps growing, the current range has a real chance to resolve upward.
