Bitcoin Alert: $84.4M Liquidated as Open Interest Jumps 1.7%

Bitcoin derivatives just registered a sharp stress event: $84.4M was liquidated over the past 24 hours while price climbed 1.1% to $85,184.3. The move was led by $52.3M in short liquidations, compared with $32.2M in long liquidations, showing that the immediate impulse favored upside rather than a broad long wipeout.
Shorts took the larger hit
The liquidation imbalance became more pronounced in the shorter windows. One-hour liquidations totaled $53.7M, including $42.7M from shorts and $11.0M from longs. Over four hours, the total reached $57.8M, with short liquidations at $46.7M. The largest reported event was a $6.9M long liquidation on HTX around $85,601.8, followed by another $3.1M long liquidation near $85,602.0. That concentration suggests the market is not moving cleanly higher: leverage is being cleared close to the current price even as shorts are also being forced out.
OI is rebuilding into overbought momentum
Open interest stood near $44.4B, up 1.7% over one hour but down 1.5% across 24 hours. The aggregate exchange snapshot was also near $44.4B and showed a 2.1% daily increase. Binance carried $8.2B and rose 4.6% over 24 hours, while Bybit held $4.8B and gained 2.7%. Gate’s $4.6B expanded 2.3% daily and 7.6% over four hours, making it the clearest venue-level acceleration in the available data.
This combination of rising short-term OI and heavy short liquidations points to fresh positioning entering after the squeeze, rather than a fully exhausted move. However, momentum is already stretched: 1-hour RSI was 72.2, versus 62.0 on the 4-hour chart and 65.7 on the daily chart. Account positioning remained net long at 57.2%, while taker positioning was more mixed at 62.8% long in the aggregate reading.
Key levels and verdict
The immediate pivot is $85,141.2, the level of a reported $1.9M Binance short liquidation. A push through $85,601.8 would test the zone where the largest recent long liquidation occurred and could extend the squeeze, but the elevated 1-hour RSI makes a rejection there a meaningful risk. The exclusive read is cautiously bullish above $85,141.2 while OI holds around $44.4B; a sustained break below $82,632.2, especially with OI remaining above $44.4B, would invalidate that view and signal that leverage is rebuilding into downside pressure.
