Bitcoin ETF Flow Signal: $42.9B OI Meets 24-Hour Liquidation Skew

Bitcoin derivatives are sending a mixed ETF-flow signal: total open interest stands at $42.9B after rising 0.6% over 24 hours, yet the market is still absorbing a strongly one-sided liquidation pattern. Binance carries the largest venue share at 17.9%, while Gate has expanded its exposure 5.7% in 24 hours. That combination suggests positioning is rebuilding, but not necessarily with clean upside conviction.

Recent coverage has centered on Bitcoin’s short-term weakness, long-term relevance and security risks around older wallets.

OI is growing, but participation is uneven

Binance has $7.7B in BTC open interest and increased 1.0% over 24 hours, making it the clearest large-venue anchor. OKX holds $2.5B, or 5.8% of the tracked total, also up 1.0%. Bybit is larger at $4.6B and 10.8% of the total, but its 24-hour increase is only 0.4%. The most aggressive expansion among the major venues is Gate, with $4.3B, a 10.0% share and a 5.7% daily increase.

The structure is therefore broad enough to matter, but uneven enough to question the quality of the bid. Bitget added 2.0% over 24 hours to reach $2.8B, yet its four-hour change was -0.8%. Bybit also slipped 0.1% over four hours, while Binance, OKX and Gate posted four-hour gains of 0.1%, 0.2% and 0.2%. For an ETF-flow interpretation, this looks more like selective derivatives re-engagement than a synchronized risk-on reset.

Funding stays defensive across key venues

The funding rate split reinforces that caution. Current funding is negative on Binance at -0.002%, Bybit at -0.003% and Gate at -0.005%, while OKX is also negative at -0.0004%. Bitget is positive at 0.0009%, and Coinbase is higher at 0.0059%. The important point is not that every venue is paying shorts; it is that the largest futures venues are mostly carrying negative rates while open interest rises.

That setup can support a squeeze if spot demand improves, but it also says leveraged traders are paying less for long exposure and are not broadly chasing the upside. The annualized basis is -17.2%, adding another layer of skepticism to the futures curve. Unless ETF-linked spot demand becomes strong enough to lift price and keep OI expanding together, the derivatives market is still treating rallies as vulnerable.

Long accounts face a taker-flow contradiction

The account-level long/short ratio is constructive on the surface: the aggregate reading is 60.8% long, with Binance at 59.2%, OKX at 59.2%, Bybit at 62.6%, Bitget at 64.3% and Gate at 58.7%. But active taker behavior is less optimistic. Binance takers are 52.3% short versus 47.7% long, while Gate takers are heavily short at 77.6%. OKX is the exception, with takers 55.7% long.

This account-versus-taker divergence matters for an ETF-flow thesis. Many accounts are positioned for recovery, but aggressive market orders are not consistently confirming that view. The result is a market vulnerable to either a short squeeze or a long flush, depending on which side receives spot confirmation first.

The liquidation map currently favors the downside for leveraged longs. In the past 1h, long liquidations reached $787,639 versus $2,079 for shorts. Over 4h, longs accounted for $867,492 and shorts $368,197. The 12h window nearly balanced at $912,495 in longs and $944,427 in shorts, but the 24h total widened sharply: $1.0M in longs against $3.6M in shorts, for $4.7M overall. The largest recorded event was a $661,522 short liquidation at $83,304.60, while a $298,095 long liquidation occurred at $82,460.60.

Verdict: The tactical bias is neutral-to-defensive while Bitcoin trades between the $82,460.60 liquidation reference and the $83,304.60 squeeze level, with total OI near $42.9B. A reclaim of $83,304.60 accompanied by OI expansion above $42.9B would invalidate the cautious view and confirm stronger upside participation; a break below $82,460.60 with rising OI would instead validate renewed long-side stress.
