Bitcoin Liquidations Hit $201M as SAND Jumps 75.1% in Futures

The derivatives leaderboard is sending two signals at once: forced positioning is heavy, but speculative appetite is still expanding. Bitcoin recorded $201.0M in 24-hour liquidations, the largest total among tracked coins, while SAND gained 75.1% in futures to $0.07816 on $2.9B of volume. Across the market, liquidations reached $568.2M and total open interest stood at $128.6B.

Liquidation leaders show where leverage broke

Bitcoin ranked first with $201.0M liquidated, including $128.1M of shorts and $72.9M of longs. That short-heavy split points to an upside squeeze rather than a broad long capitulation, although the scale means leverage has already been aggressively reset around the move.

Ethereum followed with $145.4M, almost evenly divided between $77.2M of longs and $68.3M of shorts. The balance suggests two-way volatility rather than a single directional flush. Solana ranked next at $29.5M, with $18.3M of longs versus $11.3M of shorts, showing that buyers in the high-beta segment were more exposed than sellers.

ZEC posted $24.5M of liquidations, led by $19.5M in longs against $5.0M in shorts. Its separate largest recorded liquidation was a $4.4M long at $1,255.11, making ZEC the clearest example of momentum traders being caught on the wrong side after an extended advance. XRP reached $19.4M, with $17.0M of longs and only $2.4M of shorts, another distinctly long-heavy result.

Gainers: SAND is the volume-heavy outlier

SAND was the strongest major futures gainer, up 75.1% to $0.07816 with $2.9B in 24-hour volume. It also ranked sixth in liquidations at $16.5M, including $11.0M of shorts. The combination of exceptional volume, a sharp price expansion and meaningful short liquidation indicates a crowded chase, not a quiet repricing.

Among the next strongest movers, 2U2 rose 49.8% to $0.012017 on $3.1M of volume, while NULLMASK gained 41.5% to $0.04158 on $1.1M. Their smaller turnover makes the percentage moves less useful as broad-market confirmation. NIGHT gained 32.2% to $0.05098 on $369.3M, giving its move more market participation, while MAGMA advanced 31.1% to $0.32268 on $486.0M.

Losers: downside is concentrated in thinner names

The downside ranking was more violent than the gainers list. JINQIAN fell 73.6% to $0.00087 on $1.8M of volume, and APH dropped 47.6% to $82.82 on $1.0M. BLAST declined 43.6% to $0.0002272 on $12.1M, while KNOTS lost 43.2% to $0.00288 on $1.0M. These moves show severe idiosyncratic weakness, but their volume is not comparable with SAND's $2.9B.

US fell 40.8% to $0.023467 on $305.4M, making it the more consequential loser by turnover. MOVR dropped 30.6% to $1.8312 on $622.2M, so its decline carries greater liquidity and positioning risk than the smallest names. The contrast with SAND suggests capital is rotating aggressively rather than lifting the entire altcoin complex.

The broader backdrop is cautiously bullish but not clean. The 90-day altseason reading is 52, classified as neutral, while the fear-and-greed score is 67, or greed. Bitcoin's latest index price is $84,683.65, with options max pain at $84,000 for the Oct 9 expiry and $85,000 for the nearer Oct 3 expiry. My exclusive verdict is that BTC holds a constructive bias while it remains above $84,000 and can reclaim $85,000; failure to hold $84,000, combined with open interest staying near $128.6B, would invalidate that view and favor another liquidation wave.
