BTC $80K Rejection: Last-Hour Liquidations 97.8% Longs

BTC made a run at $80,000 in the past 24 hours and came up short. The top on Binance was $79,974.8, on OKX $79,999.8. Since then price has faded to about $78,525 on Binance and $78,540 on OKX, and the liquidation flow has flipped with it. In the last hour, 97.8% of liquidations hit longs.

BTC Tests $80K and Gets Rejected

The 24-hour split still favors shorts. Total liquidations across major venues reached $456.5M, with $254.9M, or 55.8%, coming from short positions. That is the leftover of the squeeze that carried BTC upward in the first place. The move ran out of fuel just below the round number. Bitcoin is up 1.71% on Binance and 1.67% on OKX over 24 hours, but the distance from the top is about $1,450, roughly 1.8% off the high.

Last Hour: 97.8% Longs

The last hour tells a different story. Longs lost $52.0M out of a total $53.2M in liquidations, or 97.8%. That is a sharp turn from the 24-hour picture, where shorts were the ones paying. When price stalls after a breakout attempt, leveraged longs that added on the way up become the target. The hourly count of 9,397 liquidation events shows the pressure is broad rather than concentrated on one venue.

The $80K Zone Cuts Both Ways

The largest single liquidation in the recent window was a BTC long worth $4.37M on Binance, wiped at $78,093.3. During the push, two BTC shorts worth $2.49M and $2.23M were cleared at $80,402.5 and $80,008.4. Both sides have now paid around this level. Chasing a breakout above $80,000 with leverage has been expensive in either direction, and the failed test suggests the market is not ready to hold that level on the first attempt.

OI Keeps Building Below $79K

Open interest has not shrunk with the pullback. BTC OI sits at $45.4B, up 2.01% in 24 hours. Binance added 3.65% and Gate 0.95%, while OKX and Bybit trimmed 0.19% and 1.06%. Funding on Binance is 0.01% and 0.0076% on OKX, positive but far from overheated. New positions are still being opened below $79K, which means the next move will likely trigger another round of liquidations in whichever direction breaks first. For traders, the useful signal is simple: the $80,000 area is contested, and the last hour shows longs are now the ones paying when price slips.
