BTC Round Trip From $81.3K High: 12H Liquidations 86% Longs

BTC Tags $81.3K, Then Gives It All Back

Bitcoin pushed to $81,270 on Binance in the past 24 hours, then fell back to a low of $78,100 and is trading near $79,200 at the time of writing. OKX shows the same shape: a high of $81,266, a low of $78,050, and a last price around $79,194. The move up and the move down happened within one daily candle, and net change is close to flat, up roughly 0.3%. Ethereum followed the same path, touching $2,533 before settling near $2,468.

The round trip matters because leverage got built and then unwound in a short span. Prices returning to where they started can look like nothing happened. The liquidation data says otherwise.

The 12-Hour Window Tells a Different Story

Across the whole market, 24-hour liquidations total $449M, with shorts slightly ahead at 53.5%. That headline hides a sharper move. In the 12-hour window, longs paid $181.2M of the $209.6M total, or 86.4%. Long positions were hit hard while BTC slid from the $81K area toward $78K. The 4-hour window has already flipped: longs now account for 63.8% of liquidations, meaning the flush is losing force. The 1-hour window is nearly quiet at $2.3M.

The top coin took $204.1M of the 24-hour total, followed by ETH at $122.5M and SOL at $30.5M. The long flush was concentrated in the majors, not scattered across small caps.

OI and Funding: A Split Picture

Open interest tells a mixed story. Total BTC OI sits at $46.24B, down 0.43% on the day. Binance added 0.77% while OKX cut 2.06%, and Bybit added 2.68%. So the deleveraging is not uniform: some venues are rebuilding exposure even as others unwind. Funding rates are mostly mild. Binance BTC funding is 0.01%, OKX 0.0032%, while Gate and Bybit are slightly negative. That is not the profile of a crowded long market; it looks more like a reset after the flush.

What the Round Trip Means

The practical read: the $80K area is contested. BTC tagged $81.3K, got sold, and is now hovering around $79.2K with funding near zero and OI barely changed. A flush without a funding spike usually means the move was driven by positioning rather than new conviction. If longs start rebuilding with funding turning positive again, the $81K level becomes the line to watch. If OI keeps sliding, the pullback can extend toward the $78K low.

For traders, the useful data points are the liquidation windows themselves. When the 12-hour ratio flips from 86% longs to short-heavy, the pressure has moved. That kind of signal is earlier than price alone.
