Derivatives Daily Oct 11: $80.9M Liquidations Test Bitcoin

The derivatives market opened Oct. 11 with $121.5B in aggregate open interest and $80.9M in 24-hour liquidations, but the pressure was not evenly distributed: short liquidations reached $53.6M versus $27.4M for longs. That imbalance points to a market where upside squeezes remain active, even as ETF flows and options positioning argue for a more measured approach.
Shorts absorbed most of the liquidation wave
The 24-hour liquidation structure accelerated after a quieter start. The first hour recorded $1.1M in liquidations, split between $761.4K in longs and $337.9K in shorts. Across four hours, the total reached $6.4M, before the 12-hour figure expanded to $42.1M. By the full 24-hour window, liquidations had climbed to $80.9M across 53,030 events.
Binance led exchange-level activity with $35.7M, including $22.7M in short liquidations and $13.0M in long liquidations. OKX followed at $25.9M, with $17.6M in shorts. Bybit contributed $9.0M, while Gate and Bitget recorded $3.9M and $3.1M respectively. The exchange split shows that the squeeze was broad rather than isolated to one venue.
Among the five most-liquidated coins, STRK led at $13.9M, including $10.0M in shorts. MAGIC followed at $11.1M, while Ethereum reached $6.6M, with $6.0M of that total coming from short liquidations. NEAR posted $4.7M and Bitcoin $3.9M. The concentration in short liquidations for ETH, NEAR and BTC suggests that traders leaning against the recent move were more exposed than outright longs.
ETF flows remain the main drag
Institutional flow data delivered a less supportive message. The latest available Bitcoin ETF session, dated Oct. 8, showed a $244.1M outflow, bringing the seven-day total to negative $558.4M. The sequence was mixed: inflows of $102.7M, $189.8M and $118.9M were offset by outflows of $148.7M, $89.9M, $487.1M and $244.1M. Bitcoin ETF assets under management stood at $104.9B in that latest reading.
Ethereum ETF demand was weaker still. The latest session recorded a $72.5M outflow, and the seven-day total reached negative $638.3M. Every listed session in the seven-day window was negative, including outflows of $59.6M, $55.4M, $37.4M, $50.8M, $201.9M, $160.8M and $72.5M. Ethereum ETF assets under management were $15.6B. This divergence matters because derivatives leverage is expanding while spot ETF demand is contracting.
Options set a narrow near-term map
Bitcoin options show an index price of $82,909.25, total options open interest of $31.5B and a put-call open-interest ratio of 0.5869. The nearest listed expiry on Oct. 11 has max pain at $82,500, followed by $81,500 for Oct. 12 and $83,000 for both Oct. 13 and Oct. 14. The Oct. 16 expiry also centers on $83,000, with $1.2B in total open interest. For the larger Oct. 30 expiry, max pain drops to $78,000 across 12 expiries and 938 contracts.
Sentiment is not yet extreme: the Fear and Greed Index was 64, classified as Greed, on Oct. 10. At the same time, the altcoin season reading reached 80, with 40 of 50 sampled assets outperforming over the measured period. That combination can sustain upside squeezes, but it also raises the risk that crowded altcoin exposure amplifies any Bitcoin pullback.
Verdict: The near-term setup is cautiously constructive but vulnerable to a reset. Bitcoin is pinned near $82,909, with $82,500 and $83,000 acting as the immediate options corridor, while $81,500 is the key downside level and $78,000 the larger monthly max-pain marker. The view would be invalidated by a sustained break above $83,000 while total open interest remains near $121.5B, signaling that fresh demand is absorbing the ETF outflows rather than merely forcing short liquidations.
