Derivatives Daily: October 9 Liquidations Reach $1.1B as BTC Holds $81.7K

The derivatives market opened October 9 with $1.1B in 24-hour liquidations against $122.5B of global open interest. Long liquidations reached $992.7M, versus $115.4M for shorts, making the session a clear long-side reset rather than a balanced washout. Bitcoin was trading at $81,693.8, while the Fear and Greed Index remained in Greed at 64.

Long liquidation pressure dominates

The liquidation profile became especially aggressive over the latest 12 hours, when total forced closures reached $885.4M. The 4-hour window, however, showed $39.0M in liquidations with shorts contributing $32.0M, a sign that the market briefly squeezed late sellers after the broader long unwind. Binance led exchange-level losses at $566.7M, followed by OKX at $190.5M and Bybit at $135.8M.

The top five coins by liquidation value were Ethereum at $334.0M, Bitcoin at $314.2M, SOL at $77.3M, ZEC at $48.0M and XRP at $38.4M. Longs represented the dominant side in each of those large events. Ethereum alone recorded $286.3M in long liquidations, while Bitcoin saw $285.7M. The largest individual event was a $12.0M ETH short liquidation on Binance, followed by an $11.7M BTC long liquidation.

ETF flows weaken while options lean higher

Institutional flow data added a defensive signal. Bitcoin ETF products posted a $487.1M outflow on October 7, the latest available session, taking the seven-day total to -$248.1M. The path was volatile: inflows of $102.7M, $189.8M and $118.9M on October 1, October 2 and October 6 were overwhelmed by the latest withdrawal. Bitcoin ETF assets under management fell to $107.4B.

Ethereum ETF flows were weaker still. The latest session recorded a $160.8M outflow, and the seven-day total reached -$568.5M. Every listed session in the latest seven-day series was negative, with the largest daily withdrawal at $201.9M on October 6. Ethereum ETF assets under management stood at $16.4B.

Options provide a counterweight but not a full bullish confirmation. BTC options open interest was $31.9B, with a 0.6004 put-to-call open-interest ratio and a 1.4612 volume ratio. The October 9 max-pain level is $84,000, above the $81,693.8 index price, while the October 10 and October 11 levels are $83,500 and $81,500. The nearest options positioning therefore leaves $84,000 as the immediate upside magnet, but also places $81,500 close to the current market.

Market regime and trading map

Funding remains positive but restrained: the global average is 0.0025% per eight-hour period. Total market volume reached $251.2B, and the broader futures market contained $121.4B of open interest across 2,779 coins. The altcoin season reading was 77, with 27 of 35 tracked assets outperforming Bitcoin over the 90-day window, although the liquidation data shows that leverage was still concentrated on the long side.

Our exclusive verdict is cautiously constructive above $81,500, with $84,000 the first price objective and $83,500 the intermediate options reference. The bullish view is invalidated by a sustained break below $81,500 accompanied by renewed long liquidations and a rise in total open interest above $122.5B without improving ETF flows; that combination would signal leverage rebuilding into weakness rather than a clean reset. Data as of 08:05 Beijing time on Oct 9, covering Binance, OKX, Bybit and other major venues.
