DOGE OI Divergence: Gate Cuts 14.4%, MEXC Adds 7.2%

DOGE fell 1.6% while derivatives desks moved in opposite directions

DOGE traded around $0.0815 early on September 2, down 1.6% over 24 hours. The move itself was quiet, with a range between $0.0806 and $0.0839 on Binance and nearly identical levels on OKX. The story is not the price. It is open interest, which fell 3.8% to about $1.04 billion even though the coin barely moved.

That combination matters. Normally a small price change comes with stable positioning. Here, some venues cut exposure aggressively while others added, leaving the aggregate number down but the internal structure split.

Gate led the unwind, MEXC built the other way

Gate's DOGE open interest dropped 14.4% over 24 hours, the largest cut among major venues, taking its share to around 20% of the total. KuCoin trimmed 5.7% and Bitget cut 4.6%. On the other side, MEXC added 7.2% and Hyperliquid edged up 0.75%. Binance held roughly flat at 0.6%, keeping its 21.3% share.

Deleveraging concentrated on a few venues is different from a market-wide unwind. It points to specific desks or traders reducing size rather than a broad risk-off shift. MEXC and Hyperliquid stepping in suggests someone sees the dip as a chance to add exposure at a lower price.

Longs paid 96% of liquidations, funding stayed positive

Liquidations over the past 24 hours totaled roughly $2.3 million for DOGE, and longs absorbed 96% of that, about $2.23 million versus just $85,000 of shorts. The small absolute size confirms this is a low-stress flush, not a cascade.

Funding rates remained mildly positive across most exchanges, with Binance around 0.008% and OKX near 0.009% per interval, while Bybit sat slightly negative. Positive funding with falling OI usually means longs are paying to hold while leverage shrinks, which fits the picture of gradual position trimming rather than a forced squeeze.

What to watch next

The divergence between Gate and MEXC is the signal to track. If Gate keeps cutting while MEXC keeps building, the venue-level rotation will continue even if total OI stays flat. A break below $0.0806, the 24-hour low, would put more long-heavy venues under pressure, while a reclaim of $0.0839 would likely pull fresh leveraged longs back in.

For traders, the takeaway is simple: DOGE's positioning is rotating venues, not shrinking across the board. That makes aggregate OI charts less useful than per-exchange data until the split resolves.
