ETH OI +2.3% to $24.9B: Binance Adds 4.1%, Funding 0.01%

ETH OI Rebuilds to $24.9B
ETH open interest climbed 2.3% in 24 hours to $24.9 billion, with the token trading near $2,492, up 2.15% on the day. The move was led by Binance, which added 4.1% of open interest and now holds 24.5% of the total book. OKX rose 3.9% and Bybit 2.9%, while Gate trimmed 1.8% and Bitget stayed flat. The increase is broad but not frantic: total OI is back near levels last seen before this week's flush, and the build is concentrated on the two largest venues.
Shorts Paid 62% of $77.9M
Ether's 24-hour liquidations reached $77.9 million, with shorts accounting for $48.5 million, or 62%. The largest single wipe was a Binance short of 1,997.9 ETH at $2,516.80, worth $5.03 million, followed by a 922.7 ETH short at $2,514.30 for $2.32 million. Both hit as price pushed toward the $2,520 area. The pattern matches a short squeeze in progress: sellers who pressed into the $2,430-2,450 zone over the past day were forced to cover as price reclaimed $2,490.
Funding Stays Cold at 0.01%
Funding rates tell a different story from the liquidations. Binance and Bybit are both at 0.01% per 8 hours, OKX at 0.0077%, and most venues sit near zero. Gate and HTX are actually negative at -0.002% and -0.004%. Cold funding during a squeeze means longs are not paying up to hold positions, which points to covering rather than fresh leveraged buying. The modest 2.3% OI increase supports that read: leverage is rebuilding, but slowly.
What This Means for Traders
For traders, the setup is a cold rebuild after a flush. Price is up, shorts are getting squeezed, yet funding and OI growth are mild, so the move has room to extend without immediate overheating. The risk is a repeat of this week's pattern: OI peaked around $2,530-2,550 before the drop to $2,430, and if OI now climbs toward that zone with funding turning positive, the squeeze loses its cover-driven character. Watch the $2,520 resistance: a break above it with OI expanding would confirm new longs, while a rejection with funding still near zero would signal another round of range play.
