Fear & Greed Jumps to 74, Altcoin Index Stays at 46

Fear & Greed breaks out of a 60s rut

The Fear & Greed index printed 74 on September 4, its highest since late August and a 9-point jump from 65 a day earlier. The gauge spent the past week stuck in the low-to-mid 60s while BTC chopped between 76K and 78K. The breakout to 80K on short liquidation pressure, then a push to 82.3K at the highs, flipped the mood faster than the price action itself. A reading of 74 sits firmly in Greed territory but stays short of the 80-plus extreme zone that historically precedes sharp pullbacks.

Altcoin season index: rotation, not a season

The altcoin season index tells a different story. It eased to 46 on September 4 after touching 48 on September 3, holding in neutral territory for a third straight session. Out of a 50-coin sample, only 23 outperformed BTC over 90 days, well below the 75% threshold that defines a true altcoin season. The move is concentrated: BR is up 214% over 90 days, MAGMA and several small caps run hot, while names like T, UAI and QQQ sit below BTC's 32.7% gain. Broad participation is missing, which is why the index reads neutral even as sentiment turns greedy.

BTC derivatives confirm the squeeze was real

BTC traded around 80,800 at the snapshot, up 4.4% in 24 hours with a range of roughly 77,050 to 82,280 across venues. Open interest climbed 6.4% to 45.4 billion, and the 24-hour liquidation tally hit 608 million with shorts covering 88% of it. Binance's BTC open interest alone grew 10% in a day. Funding stayed modest at 0.0088% on Binance and 0.0064% on OKX, so leveraged longs have not piled in at a rate that would make the rally fragile on fees alone. The squeeze cleared short positioning built during the slide below 77K, and the derivative structure looks healthier now than it did at the September 2 low.

What 74 greed with a neutral altcoin index means

This combination is a warning sign for chasing. Sentiment on majors has flipped greedy while the breadth signal says the rally is narrow. BTC leading with shorts being squeezed is a momentum event, and momentum events can end abruptly once the forced buying stops. Greed readings near 74 have historically been a place to trim rather than add. Watch whether the altcoin index can push above 60 with broader participation; that shift, not a higher Fear & Greed print, is what would confirm a real rotation out of BTC.
