HYPE Bucks the Tape: +1.3% to $78.27 With Binance OI Up 5.8% on a Red Day

On a day when bitcoin printed September lows and XRP fell nearly 9%, Hyperliquid's HYPE went the other way: up 1.3% to $78.27, with futures open interest rising 1.2% to roughly $2.8 billion. Relative strength against a falling tape is one of the more reliable momentum signals in crypto — and HYPE's comes with unusually clean internals.

News context: Cointelegraph reported US charges against former Robinhood engineers who allegedly traded Hyperliquid perpetuals ahead of token listings — a headline that kept the platform's name in the news cycle without denting its token.

The build is led by the biggest book

Binance grew its HYPE open interest 5.8% in 24 hours to $320 million (an 11.6% share), with Bybit adding 3.2% to $254 million and Bitget 2.8% to $194 million. OKX was flat and Gate trimmed 1.5% on a small base. Note the structure: centralized-exchange books are doing the building, layered on top of Hyperliquid's own native market. Fresh OI on a rising price with the largest venue leading is textbook accumulation, not short interest — confirmed by funding, which is positive everywhere among majors (OKX at the 0.01% cap, Bybit at 0.0093% per 8 hours).

Almost nobody is getting hurt — yet

HYPE's 24-hour liquidation total was just $4.6 million ($3.8 million longs, $851K shorts) across 774 events — trivial against a $2.8 billion OI pool, and an order of magnitude calmer than what majors endured. The largest forced exits printed at $76.40 and $75.57 on OKX (longs) and a short at $79.40 on Hyperliquid itself, bracketing the day's range. Positioning is moderate rather than euphoric: 60.2% of accounts long overall, 58.0% on Binance. The one discordant note is Binance taker flow at only 32.8% buyers — aggressive flow there is selling into strength, while Gate takers at 74.6% buyers chase it.

What keeps the divergence alive

Our read: HYPE is behaving like a market with its own demand driver, and the $76.4–$75.6 zone where the day's long liquidations printed is the support that defines the trend. Holding above it keeps the accumulation pattern intact and targets a retest of $79.40 — the short-liquidation print — then the psychological $80. The warning sign would be OI continuing to build while price stalls under $80 with Binance takers still 2-to-1 sellers; that combination would mean distribution into leveraged late-longs, and HYPE's relative-strength halo would become fragile exactly when the crowd trusts it most. For now, green price, growing OI, positive funding and minimal liquidations make HYPE the cleanest long structure among large caps today.
