NEAR Protocol: $1.55B OI Rises 5.7% as Shorts Face Breakout Risk

NEAR Protocol is trading at $5.262 while open interest has climbed 5.7% in 24 hours to roughly $1.55B. That expansion is arriving alongside a 61.6% jump in volume, giving the move more participation than a thin price spike. Yet the derivatives picture is not uniformly bullish: account positioning favors longs, while active takers are leaning short on several major venues. Market attention is also being drawn to a possible spot ETF launch after a proposed product cleared key exchange and regulatory hurdles.
OI is expanding, but concentration matters
Binance holds the largest reported share of NEAR OI at $276.5M, or 17.8%, after rising 4.1% over 24 hours. Bybit follows with $236.0M, representing 15.2% and increasing 1.9%. Gate is the most aggressive growth center: its $219.3M position equals 14.1% of the total and has surged 28.7% in 24 hours. Bitget adds another $79.8M, or 5.2%, with a 2.7% daily increase.
The key distinction is the shorter horizon. Binance OI is down 2.0% over 4 hours, Bybit is down 4.7%, and OKX is down 1.9%, even as their daily changes remain positive. Gate, by contrast, is still up 0.9% over the same window. This suggests some leverage is being reduced on the venues carrying the largest established positions, while fresh risk is still entering Gate. For a durable breakout, OI needs to stabilize rather than simply rise on one exchange.
Funding is positive, but not euphoric everywhere
The funding rate is 0.003% on average for the reported market, while Binance, Bybit, Bitget, Gate and OKX each show 0.010%. Aster is also at 0.010%, compared with Hyperliquid at 0.003% and Lighter at 0.010%. The dispersion becomes more important on the negative side: Coinbase is at -0.000%, Kraken at -0.001%, and CoinEx at -0.079%.
This combination does not describe a fully crowded long trade. The largest venues are charging longs, but the rates are still modest, while isolated negative readings show that some markets are being traded defensively or with short demand. NEAR’s basis is also negative at -0.1%, equivalent to -41.5% annualized, which reinforces the message that futures pricing is not confirming an overheated premium over spot. OI growth therefore looks more like a leveraged attempt to extend the move than a clean consensus trade.
Liquidations favor a squeeze, but takers disagree
The liquidation structure is the clearest short-term bullish signal. Over 24 hours, short liquidations reached $7.1M versus $3.4M for longs, for a total of $10.6M. The same imbalance appeared over 1 hour, with $2,302 in shorts liquidated against $693 in longs. Over 12 hours, however, the gap narrowed to $2.1M in shorts versus $1.5M in longs. The 4-hour window flipped strongly toward long losses, with $844.4K liquidated on longs and only $33.9K on shorts.
The largest recorded short liquidation was worth $321.3K near $5.337 on Gate, followed by $307.4K near $5.386 on Binance. Additional short liquidations appeared near $5.319, $5.307 and $5.415, creating a visible cluster above the current price. That structure leaves room for another squeeze if price pushes through the $5.34 area, but it also identifies where late shorts may already have been forced out.
Positioning adds a necessary counterweight. The account long/short ratio is 60.1% long overall. Binance accounts are 61.8% long and Bybit accounts 61.7% long, while Bitget is the most directional at 64.4% long. Gate is more balanced at 52.5% long. Active takers are less committed: Binance takers are 56.9% long, but OKX takers are 45.2% long and Gate takers only 28.5% long. In other words, holders are positioned for continuation, while aggressive execution is still selling into strength.
Verdict: The breakout thesis remains valid while NEAR holds $5.26 and OI stays above $1.55B, with a push through the $5.34-$5.39 liquidation cluster offering the strongest confirmation. A move back below $5.26 accompanied by OI falling below $1.55B would invalidate the view and signal that the expansion was leverage unwinding rather than breakout sponsorship.
