STORJ +19% With OI Doubling While Funding Stays Negative

STORJ outpaces a flat market
STORJ climbed roughly 19% to $0.0499 in the past 24 hours, the strongest move among mid-cap tokens while BTC sits at $78,817, up 1.9%. Most altcoins are red: ETH +1.1%, SOL +0.9%, while XRP, DOGE, AAVE and UNI are all down. The rally in STORJ is not part of a broad alt push. Binance shows the pair at $0.04992 with a 24h change of +19.0%, and OKX shows $0.05046, up about 20.6% from its 24h open. The two exchanges agree on the direction and the size of the move.
Open interest doubled in 24 hours
The more interesting part is on the derivatives side. Aggregate open interest in STORJ futures reached $14.5 million, up 95.2% in 24 hours. That is a near-doubling of leverage in a token that most desks barely track. The build is broad: Binance OI is up 42%, Bybit +72.6%, Gate +145%, and KuCoin +266%. KuCoin now holds 25.6% of total OI, Binance 28.7%, Bybit 19.5%. The last four hours alone added 38% on Binance and 57.8% on Bybit, so this is not a completed move; new positions are still opening as of the snapshot.
Funding is negative across every major venue
The unusual part is funding. Even with price up 19% and OI nearly doubled, funding rates are negative on all 14 exchanges that report them. The OI-weighted average is -0.0145%, with Binance at -0.0127%, Bybit -0.02%, Gate -0.0133% and KuCoin -0.0139%. Negative funding means short sellers are paying longs to keep their positions, and that payment stream has not flipped even as the price rose. This is the signature of a squeeze that still has fuel: shorts are losing money on price and paying funding at the same time.
What this setup means for traders
For anyone watching STORJ, the setup cuts both ways. The combination of negative funding and rising OI is a classic short-covering setup, and if price pushes higher, forced buybacks can accelerate the move. The flip side is that the leverage base is thin: $14.5 million of OI spread across 10 exchanges is small, and the biggest single OI increases came from KuCoin and Gate, venues with less depth. Long-tail liquidity can vanish quickly, so the same fuel that powers the squeeze can reverse it. Watch funding closely; a flip to positive after a push would signal that the short side has been cleared and the squeeze thesis is done.
