XRP Funding Turns Negative on 5 Major Venues While 76% of Accounts Stay Long

XRP's derivatives market has split into two camps that cannot both be right. Funding has flipped negative on five major venues — OKX at -0.0008%, Bybit at -0.0005%, Bitget at -0.0018%, KuCoin at -0.0015% per 8 hours, and CoinEx at an extreme -0.28% — meaning short sellers are now paying carry to keep pressing a token already down 8.8% to $1.2651. Yet 75.9% of all accounts with open XRP positions remain long.
News context: CryptoSlate reported on Ripple's push into university stadium sponsorships — visibility that helps explain why retail conviction has stayed long through the slide.
Negative funding is the shorts' bet, not their victory
When funding goes negative during a decline, it means aggressive money is short and confident enough to pay for the position. Sometimes that is smart money front-running a breakdown; just as often it marks the moment shorts get greedy at the bottom of a move. The distinguishing factor is usually whether the long crowd has capitulated. It has not: Bitget accounts are 82.8% long, Bybit 78.4%, OKX 75.6%, Binance 71.1%. The 24-hour tape already liquidated $28.4 million of those longs against $3.1 million of shorts, and still the ratios barely moved.
The taker tape shows the fight venue by venue
Binance takers are 59.9% buyers — the strongest dip-buying flow among majors — while Gate takers are only 17.1% buyers, an extreme sell-side aggression print. Funding on Binance itself, notably, is still positive at 0.0012%, and Gate at 0.0024%. So the two venues with positive funding host the most aggressive buying and selling respectively, while the negative-funding venues sit in between. This is a fractured market, not a consensus short.
How the tension resolves
Our read: crowded longs plus negative funding is a coiled spring, and the direction of release depends on the $1.2696 level where the day's last major liquidation printed. Scenario one: price holds above it for another day, negative carry bleeds the shorts, and a squeeze toward $1.35 unwinds the freshest sellers — the higher-probability path if Binance's buy-side takers persist. Scenario two: a decisive break below $1.26 turns the 76% long cohort into cascade fuel toward $1.20, and the shorts' carry bet pays off in hours. The most actionable signal is the funding average itself: a move back to flat while price holds would confirm the short pressure failed — historically the cleanest XRP bounce setup. Watch it at each 8-hour funding print.
