ATOM OI Jumps 9.6% to $68.8M: MEXC Adds 50%, Price Flat

ATOM Open Interest Rises While Price Sits Still

ATOM open interest climbed 9.6% in 24 hours to $68.8 million, yet the token itself barely moved. Binance and OKX both quote ATOM near $1.448, and the 24-hour range on either venue is narrow: roughly $1.437 to $1.471. That gap between rising exposure and a quiet spot price is the detail worth reading, because it usually means positions are being built before a move, not during one.

MEXC Overtakes Binance as the Top OI Venue

The most striking shift is venue-level. MEXC lifted its open interest about 50% over the past day to $16.25 million, and that pool is now the single largest for the token anywhere, edging past Binance at $15.96 million. MEXC's share of total ATOM OI sits near 23.6%, with Binance at 23.2% and Bybit third at $13.77 million. Binance added only 1.5% during the same stretch, so this is not a broad-based buildup; it is one venue absorbing fresh flow while the incumbents stay quiet. OKX actually trimmed positions by 3.3%, and KuCoin cut 5.6%.

Funding Stays Cold, So This Is Not Crowded Leverage

Funding rates across major venues remain flat to slightly negative. Binance shows -0.0065%, Gate -0.023%, MEXC -0.0063% and Hyperliquid -0.0012%, while OKX is marginally positive at +0.0077%. Negative funding means shorts are paying longs, which is unusual for an OI surge. In most rallies built on fresh longs, funding turns positive quickly. Here it has not, which suggests the new MEXC positions are not one-directional speculation; some of the flow may be hedged or spread-related rather than outright bullish leverage.

What to Watch on ATOM

For traders the setup is a coiled one. Open interest is expanding while the price compresses into a tight $1.43 to $1.47 band, and funding gives no clue which side is crowded. A break above $1.47 with MEXC OI still climbing would confirm conviction behind the new positions; a drop through $1.43 with OI starting to unwind would point to the buildup being defensive. Aggregate volume has been thin relative to majors, so moves can come in quick bursts. Treat the OI jump as a signal to watch the range boundaries rather than a reason to chase price.
