Avalanche AVAX: $444.7M OI Meets 68.4% Long Accounts, Short Squeeze

Avalanche derivatives are flashing a positioning split: AVAX open interest stands at $444.7M after gaining 5.8% in 24 hours, while 68.4% of tracked accounts are long. That headline bullishness is challenged by a -6.4% basis and a -23.4% annualized basis, showing that leverage has expanded without producing a broadly positive futures premium. A recent analyst forecast has also made reclaim language part of the AVAX conversation, but the derivatives tape is more useful here than a single directional target.

OI is expanding, but not evenly

The venue distribution shows why the aggregate figure needs context. Binance carries $109.2M, or 24.6% of tracked open interest, and its OI is up 7.3% over 24 hours but down 1.8% over 4 hours. Bybit holds $79.6M, or 17.9%, with a larger 8.3% daily increase but a 2.5% four-hour contraction. Gate is close at $80.0M and 18.0% share, rising 9.1% over 24 hours while still adding 0.5% over 4 hours. OKX is smaller at $18.5M and 4.2% share, yet its 13.9% daily and 1.9% four-hour gains make it the clearest short-term expansion pocket among these major venues.

This is a positioning divergence rather than a unified leverage impulse. Binance and Bybit are both unwinding some recent OI at the shorter window even as their daily totals remain higher, while Gate and OKX continue to build. The result is a market where the aggregate increase can coexist with localized de-risking.

Funding and flow tell different stories

The funding rate map is fragmented. Binance is positive at 0.0%, Bitget is also positive at 0.0%, and OKX is positive at 0.0% when rounded to one decimal place. Bybit is negative at -0.0%, Gate is -0.0%, and CoinEx is the most negative at -0.1%. The low rounded readings should not be treated as identical: the underlying values range from 0.01% on Aster and KuCoin to -0.10597% on CoinEx. This spread means long holders are not paying a consistent premium across venues, despite the long-heavy account profile.

The account-versus-taker split is even sharper. Binance accounts are 63.3% long, but Binance takers are 54.4% short. Gate accounts are 62.7% long while Gate takers are 94.7% long. Bybit has the strongest account skew, with 73.9% long. In other words, passive or existing account positioning is broadly long, while active execution ranges from aggressive buying on Gate to net selling on Binance. That divergence raises the risk of a fast squeeze in either direction rather than confirming a stable trend.

Liquidations favor a squeeze, not certainty

The liquidation structure currently leans against shorts. Over 24 hours, short liquidations reached $449.6K versus $100.7K for longs, out of $550.3K total. The imbalance was not constant: over 12 hours, longs lost $86.5K compared with $50.0K for shorts, while the 4-hour window showed $15.1K in long liquidations against $7.7K in shorts. That reversal suggests two-way stress beneath the daily short squeeze headline.

The largest recorded events were short liquidations around $10.971 worth $86.9K and $10.789 worth $83.5K. With AVAX at roughly $10.884, those levels frame the immediate positioning test: a move back above $10.971 could force another round of short covering, while a break below $10.789 would expose the long-heavy account base to renewed liquidation pressure.

Verdict

AVAX has a squeeze-positive setup, but not a clean bullish confirmation. The key combination to watch is price holding above $10.971 while open interest stays above $444.7M; that would indicate fresh leverage is supporting the upside rather than merely recycling positions. The view is invalidated if AVAX falls below $10.789 while OI contracts below $444.7M, especially if long liquidations again overtake shorts in the shorter windows. Until then, the negative basis, split funding, and Binance taker selling keep the rally vulnerable to sharp positioning reversals.
