Polkadot Derivatives: $201M OI Meets 68.2% Long Accounts Split

Polkadot is trading at $1.2503 after a 1.4% move, but the derivatives picture is less unified than the price suggests. Total open interest is $201.3M, barely higher over 24 hours at 0.0%, while accounts are 68.2% long and taker positioning is 66.1% long. That combination points to a market leaning bullish in headcount, yet not adding risk evenly across venues.

A market commentary says momentum is stalling near a midpoint and questions whether the bullish case can hold, which fits the split visible in the derivatives data.

OI leadership is not moving together

Gate carries the largest reported OI share at 20.3%, with $40.8M and a 2.2% increase over 24 hours. Binance follows with an 18.9% share and $37.9M, but its OI has declined 1.0%. Bybit holds 13.6% with $27.3M and has added 4.0%, while Bitget represents 11.1% at $22.3M after a 1.2% increase. OKX is the clearest outlier among the larger venues: its $9.9M position equals 4.9% of the total and has fallen 7.1%.

The short-term direction is more synchronized than the daily change. Binance, OKX, Bybit and Bitget all reduced OI over the latest four-hour window by 0.1%, 1.9%, 1.2% and 0.1%, respectively, while Gate declined 0.7%. In other words, daily OI growth at several venues has not translated into fresh four-hour commitment. The overall one-hour OI change of 0.9% may therefore reflect a brief build rather than broad confirmation.

Funding rates expose the venue divide

The average funding rate is negative at -0.0034% for the stated eight-hour measure, and the current venue readings are unusually dispersed. Binance, Bitget, Gate and Bybit are positive at 0.010%, 0.010%, 0.010% and 0.0039%, respectively. OKX is negative at -0.0088%, while Coinbase is much higher at 0.0515%. CoinEx is the strongest negative print at -0.2380%.

This is not a clean market-wide bullish signal. Positive funding at the venues with substantial long-account participation suggests longs are paying to maintain exposure, but the negative prints on OKX and CoinEx show that the same trade is not priced consistently everywhere. The negative basis of -0.1%, equivalent to -32.2% annualized, reinforces the idea that derivatives demand remains structurally cautious despite the long-heavy account split.

Liquidations favor a crowded-long warning

The liquidation profile changes across the observation windows. Over 24 hours, total liquidations reached $212.7K, with $146.8K from shorts and $66.0K from longs. That short-heavy balance indicates that earlier upside movement forced more bearish positions out. The largest recorded event was a $37.7K DOTUSDT short liquidation at $1.2689 on Binance.

More recent windows tell a different story. In four hours, long liquidations reached $15.4K against only $474.6 in shorts. Across twelve hours, the split was $34.0K long versus $24.7K short. The rotation toward long liquidations, combined with 68.2% long accounts and a 66.1% long taker reading, suggests that buyers are now more vulnerable to a pullback even though the full-day liquidation total still reflects the earlier short squeeze.

Verdict

DOT’s actionable setup is a positioning divergence, not a confirmed trend. Gate’s $40.8M OI and 20.3% share provide the strongest accumulation signal, but Binance’s $37.9M exposure is shrinking and OKX is contracting sharply. A sustained move above the $1.2689 liquidation level with OI rebuilding beyond $201.3M would strengthen the upside case. Conversely, a break below $1.2503 while long liquidations continue would validate the crowded-long risk. The view is invalidated if price holds above $1.2689 while four-hour OI turns broadly higher across Binance, OKX, Bybit, Bitget and Gate.
