Bitcoin Options: $32.8B Open Interest, PCR at 0.55 — Reading the Setup

Bitcoin options markets hold $32.8 billion in open interest — 429,278 BTC in contract terms — with 24-hour volume of just $50 million. That combination, a large stock of contracts against thin daily turnover, is typical of a market where positioning is held rather than traded, and it makes two metrics especially useful: the put-to-call ratio and max pain.

Put-to-call ratio: 0.55 and what it means

The PCR measures put open interest against call open interest. At 0.55, slightly more than half of all open contracts are puts — a mildly defensive posture rather than outright bearish. It is important to distinguish the ratio by open interest (positioning, slow-moving) from the ratio by volume (activity, fast-moving): the latter currently reads 0.32, meaning today's actual trading has been call-heavy even as the standing book leans put. Fresh call activity against a put-heavy book often precedes a squeeze higher.

Max pain: $72,000 for the 2026-09-25 expiry

Max pain is the strike where the largest number of option contracts would expire worthless, causing the greatest combined loss for option holders. For the 2026-09-25 expiry that level is $72,000, with the index at $75,768. Max pain describes where the payout structure is most concentrated, not a prediction — markets routinely settle far from it, particularly when spot flows dominate. Its real use is as a reference point for where dealers' hedging flows may cluster into expiry.

How to use this page

Watch three things together: PCR by open interest (positioning bias), PCR by volume (today's activity), and the gap between index price and max pain (expiry pressure). When all three align, options positioning becomes a useful input; when they conflict — as they do now, with a put-heavy book but call-heavy volume — the signal is weaker than each metric suggests on its own.
