Cosmos Hub ATOM Funding Falls to -0.0162% on Bybit as OI Slips

Cosmos Hub ATOM is trading at $1.927 while its aggregate perpetual funding average is -0.0325%, open interest is $95.7M, and 24-hour liquidations total $235.7K. The combination points to a crowded long bias in accounts, but not a clean bullish positioning signal: negative funding means longs are being paid while shorts receive the funding transfer, creating a direct cost for bearish exposure even as leverage has softened.

A recent market note described buyers testing a nearby resistance area as derivatives positioning expanded, but the current venue data shows a more conflicted setup. The key question is whether negative funding reflects durable short demand or simply a temporary imbalance before further long liquidation.

Funding is negative, but uneven

The funding rate spread is wide across venues. Bybit is at -0.0162%, OKX at -0.0132%, and Binance at -0.0034%, making the three major negative readings broadly consistent. Bitget and Gate are both positive at 0.0100%, while Aster is also positive at 0.0066%. The most extreme negative print is CoinEx at -0.6343%, although its open interest share is only 0.0% after rounding in the available data, so that rate should not be treated as the market-wide signal.

The aggregate negative average therefore appears to be driven mainly by larger negative readings on Bybit, OKX, and Binance rather than a uniform condition across every venue. For traders, that distinction matters: a short position can collect funding on one exchange while paying it on another, making cross-venue execution and timing more important than the headline average alone.

Open interest is concentrated, not expanding broadly

Total open interest is down 0.5% over 24 hours, even though the one-hour change is positive at 1.1%. Binance holds the largest share at 26.9%, with $25.7M in OI and a 24-hour decline of 1.6%. Bybit follows with 18.5% and $17.7M, but its OI has fallen 2.7%. Gate controls 14.0% and $13.4M after a 3.1% daily drop.

Bitget is the exception among the larger visible venues: its 7.3% share equals $7.0M, while OI has risen 2.9% over 24 hours and 3.2% over four hours. OKX holds 5.5% with $5.2M, down 0.8% on the day. This leaves the market with a modestly shrinking aggregate base and selective venue-level additions, rather than broad confirmation that fresh leverage is supporting the price.

Liquidations reveal a delayed long flush

The liquidation structure changes sharply by window. In the latest hour, shorts account for $10.9K against only $46.23 of longs; the four-hour window is similar, with $11.0K of shorts versus $77.07 of longs. That shows a short-term squeeze against bearish positions despite negative funding.

Over 12 hours, however, long liquidations reach $131.7K compared with $12.8K for shorts. Across 24 hours, longs total $167.2K and shorts $68.5K. The largest listed event was a $49.6K Binance long liquidation at $1.881, giving that price a concrete stress marker. The data suggests that earlier long leverage has already been removed, while the latest negative funding is attracting or sustaining shorts that have not yet been broadly forced out.

Verdict

Account positioning remains long-heavy: Binance accounts are 60.7% long, while the active taker reading is lower at 58.4% long, a modest divergence that says directional participation is less bullish than the account count. The exclusive read is bearish-to-neutral below the $1.927 reference, with $1.881 as the clearest liquidation-derived downside level and $95.7M as the OI threshold to monitor. The view is invalidated if ATOM holds above $1.927 while OI expands beyond $95.7M and aggregate funding flips positive, signaling that leverage is rebuilding alongside genuine long demand rather than merely absorbing negative funding.
