Crypto Market Recap: $68.2B Volume and $87.1M Liquidations

The crypto market closed its evening session with $68.2B in 24-hour volume, $120.8B in futures open interest and $86.9M in liquidations. The headline structure was risk-on but uneven: Bitcoin sat at an options index price of $83,079.9, while altcoins captured the strongest momentum and the broader derivatives market remained heavily exposed to short-side stress.

Liquidity and leverage set the tone

Aggregate derivatives data puts total open interest at $122.0B, close to the $120.8B futures reading from the market overview. Average funding stayed positive at 0.0032% for the latest 8-hour period, a constructive signal but not an extreme one. That combination suggests traders were still paying to maintain long exposure, yet funding had not reached a level that alone would indicate a crowded long trade.

Liquidations were skewed toward shorts. The 24-hour liquidation overview recorded $49.6M in short liquidations against $37.3M in long liquidations, for a total of $86.9M. The broader derivatives feed showed a similar $87.1M total. In the shorter windows, the imbalance was more pronounced: the latest hour saw $1.6M in short liquidations versus $0.6M in longs, while the 4-hour window recorded $4.5M against $3.6M. The 12-hour period was more balanced, with $20.3M in shorts and $24.5M in longs, indicating that the session included both forced upside chasing and earlier downside cleanup.

Altcoins delivered the strongest gains

Futures leadership was concentrated in a small group of high-beta names. PUMPBTC rose 305.8%, CYBERLEEK gained 286.2%, and STRK advanced 62.2% to $0.1152 on $3.6B in volume. LUMIA climbed 42.7%, while CHIP and CFX added 29.2% and 26.8%. TIA also gained 20.0% to $0.5831, supported by $686.2M in volume.

The downside was equally fragmented. JINQIAN fell 73.6%, APH dropped 47.6%, and US declined 43.9% on $393.2M in volume. BLAST lost 41.5%, while JCT fell 38.5%. This divergence matters: the market was not experiencing a uniform altcoin rally, but rather a rotation into liquid momentum pockets alongside sharp drawdowns in weaker contracts.

The 90-day altcoin season index reinforces that interpretation. It reached 80, with 40 of 50 sampled assets outperforming. Among the larger liquid names, Ethereum gained 41.2% over the period, SOL rose 46.3%, and NEAR advanced 175.4%. The breadth is strong, but the futures gainers list shows that leverage is still amplifying dispersion.

Options mark a clear BTC battleground

Bitcoin options open interest stood at $31.3B, with a 0.6 put-to-call open-interest ratio and a $78,000 maximum-pain level for the Oct. 30 expiry. Near-term expiry levels cluster closer to spot: maximum pain is $82,000 for Oct. 12 and $83,000 for both Oct. 13 and Oct. 14. The Oct. 16 expiry carries $1.3B in open interest and also has a maximum pain level of $83,000, making the $82,000-$83,000 zone the key positioning area for the next session.

Verdict: The market bias remains bullish but fragile, led by altcoin momentum rather than a clean BTC breakout. Holding Bitcoin above $82,000 while total futures open interest stays near or below $120.8B would support continued rotation and controlled upside. The view is invalidated by a sustained break below $82,000 while open interest remains above $120.8B, which would point to fresh leveraged selling rather than a simple options-driven consolidation.
