Crypto Market Recap: $197.8M Liquidated as Altcoins Lead

The crypto derivatives market opened with $92.4B in 24-hour futures volume, $121.7B in total open interest and $197.8M in liquidations. The most important imbalance was on the liquidation side: short positions accounted for $138.3M, more than twice the $59.5M liquidated from longs. That combination points to a market still being pushed higher by short covering, even as leverage remains substantial. The supplied market snapshot does not include a total market-cap figure, so the derivatives complex provides the clearest read on today’s structure.
Broad participation favors altcoins
Risk appetite is broad rather than limited to Bitcoin. The 90-day altcoin-season reading reached 84, with 27 of 32 sampled assets outperforming Bitcoin, whose 90-day change stood at 28.7%. Ethereum gained 34.1% over the same window, while Solana rose 43.0%, ZEC advanced 126.6%, STRK surged 325.3% and NEAR climbed 194.7%.
The futures leaderboard reinforces that rotation. PUMPBTC gained 305.8% in 24 hours, MAGIC rose 47.4%, STRK added 18.4% and NEAR advanced 12.1%. The downside was more fragmented: JINQIAN fell 73.6%, AGENCY dropped 49.9%, APH lost 47.6% and BLAST declined 41.5%. This is a high-dispersion market, where capital is rewarding selected themes while weaker contracts are being rapidly repriced.
Sentiment remains constructive but not euphoric: the fear-and-greed reading was 69, classified as Greed. That supports continuation in liquid leaders, but it also raises the probability of sharp reversals in thin or recently accelerated contracts.
Liquidations show a squeeze-led advance
Shorts were under pressure across every measured horizon. In the latest hour, short liquidations reached $2.8M versus $0.5M for longs. Over four hours, the split was $6.4M short against $19.9M long, but the twelve-hour and 24-hour figures swung decisively back toward shorts, at $117.9M versus $34.9M and $138.3M versus $59.5M respectively. The full-day total covered 62,179 liquidation events.
Bitcoin led coin-level liquidations at $50.0M, including $42.0M in shorts, while Ethereum recorded $43.8M, with $33.5M from shorts. STRK saw $20.7M liquidated and NEAR $10.7M. Exchange concentration also matters: Binance recorded $78.0M, OKX $48.4M, Hyperliquid $22.0M and Bybit $20.3M. The largest reported event was a $4.9M Bitcoin short liquidation on Hyperliquid, followed by a $2.5M Ethereum short on OKX.
Funding is positive, while options define the map
Positioning is still mildly long-biased through funding. The aggregate eight-hour average funding rate was positive at 0.0% when rounded to one decimal place, while total derivatives open interest stood at $122.9B in the global derivatives feed. The rate is not extreme, but positive funding combined with large short liquidations suggests that the rally is being reinforced by forced exits rather than purely fresh directional demand.
Options give Bitcoin a clear near-term reference. The index price was $83,627.62, with $31.6B in total Bitcoin options open interest and a put-call open-interest ratio of 0.6. The October 12 max-pain level was $82,500, the October 13 level was $83,000 and the October 16 level was $83,000. Further out, the October 30 max-pain level was $78,000. Meanwhile, seven-day Bitcoin ETF flows totaled negative $558.4M, and Ethereum ETF flows totaled negative $638.3M, creating a notable contrast with the strong altcoin performance.
Verdict: The bias remains constructive while Bitcoin holds the $82,500 max-pain level and keeps the $83,627.62 index area in play; a sustained break above $84,000 would favor another squeeze toward higher liquidity, while a loss of $82,500 with open interest still near $121.7B would invalidate the bullish continuation view and expose the $78,000 October 30 options magnet.
