Derivatives Daily: Bitcoin Faces $197.4M Liquidations on Oct 12

The derivatives market absorbed $197.4M in liquidations over the past 24 hours, including $138.0M from short positions versus $59.4M from longs. At the same time, total open interest stood at $121.7B across 2,791 tracked coins, while the broader derivatives gauge showed $122.9B. The immediate signal is not a clean trend reversal: short-side stress is high, but positioning remains large and funding is still positive.

Short liquidations dominate the tape

The liquidation imbalance became more pronounced as the window narrowed. In the latest 12 hours, shorts lost $117.7M against $34.9M for longs, while the four-hour split was $6.1M shorts and $20.5M longs. The 24-hour count reached 61,933 events, compared with 34,704 in the 12-hour window.

Bitcoin led the listed coins with $50.0M liquidated, including $42.0M in shorts and $8.0M in longs. Ethereum followed with $43.8M, made up of $33.5M in short liquidations and $10.3M in longs. STRK was notable for its $20.7M total and 12,202 liquidation events, while NEAR recorded $10.7M and SOL $10.2M. The concentration in BTC and ETH suggests that the broad move is being transmitted through the most liquid contracts, while altcoin leverage is adding event count.

ETF flows weaken while options set a lower anchor

Spot ETF demand was a clear drag in the latest available session. Bitcoin funds registered a $244.1M outflow on Oct 8, taking the seven-day total to -$558.4M and leaving reported AUM at $104.9B. Ethereum funds also saw a $72.5M daily outflow, with the seven-day total at -$638.3M and AUM at $15.6B. This creates a notable divergence: leverage is forcing short-covering, but the institutional flow data is not confirming aggressive fresh demand.

In options, Bitcoin traded around an index price of $83,680.07. Aggregate options open interest was $31.7B, with a 0.6 put-call ratio by open interest and 934 contracts across 12 expiries. The Oct 12 max pain level is $82,500, rising to $83,000 on Oct 13, $83,500 on Oct 14 and $84,000 on Oct 15. The larger Oct 16 expiry carries $1.3B in total open interest and has max pain at $83,000. The detailed Oct 30 structure points lower at $78,000, making that level an important medium-term downside reference.

Sentiment is constructive, but not risk-free

The Fear and Greed Index stands at 61, classified as Greed, while the 90-day altcoin index is 88, classified as altcoin season. The combination shows broad participation, but it also means crowded upside expectations may amplify a pullback if ETF selling persists. The average RSI reading is 54.8, which supports a balanced rather than overheated momentum reading.

Verdict: The tactical bias is cautiously constructive above Bitcoin's $82,500 and $83,000 options anchors, with $84,000 the key upside price level; the market's main risk is that $121.7B of total open interest remains vulnerable to another liquidation wave. This view is invalidated if Bitcoin loses $78,000 while options open interest remains near $31.7B, or if it reclaims $84,000 and total derivatives open interest holds above $122.9B, which would signal renewed upside absorption rather than a squeeze-only bounce.
