ETH Positioning Extreme: 78% of Binance Accounts Long, Funding Near Zero

Ethereum's leveraged crowd has picked a side. Across major venues, 71.0% of accounts with open ETH perp positions are long, and on Binance the figure reaches 78.0% — nearly four longs for every short. What makes the reading unusual is the price action around it: ETH is down 0.9% at $2,386, sitting near September lows, and funding has compressed to almost nothing.

News context: Cointelegraph covered Bitmine's projection of $334 million in annual staking revenue from its ETH treasury, part of the structural-demand story that keeps retail conviction long even through drawdowns.

Crowded and cheap is not the same as safe

Binance ETH funding is printing just 0.0006% per 8 hours, OKX 0.0009%, Gate 0.0009% and MEXC 0.0005% — effectively free carry — while dYdX has flipped outright negative and HTX sits at the 0.01% cap as the outlier. Near-zero funding with extreme long skew is a specific and historically fragile combination: it means the marginal derivative buyer has no cost pressure to close, so positions accumulate until price, not carry, forces the reset. The reset mechanism is already visible — $166.1 million of ETH was liquidated in 24 hours, $128.3 million of it longs.

Taker flow splits the exchanges

Aggression tells a more nuanced story than accounts do. Gate takers are 66.6% buyers — aggressive dip-buying — and Binance takers lean 51.5% to the buy side, but OKX takers are only 43.7% buyers, meaning OKX flow is net hitting bids. Overall taker buy share sits at 53.9%, mildly constructive. Combined with the 4-hour RSI at 35.0, the picture is a market being aggressively bought into weakness by some desks while others distribute — a genuine disagreement, not a consensus.

What breaks the deadlock

Our read: with the account crowd this long, ETH's downside is mechanically amplified — a break of the $2,346–$2,364 zone where the day's largest liquidations printed would tap directly into the 78% Binance long cohort and could cascade quickly toward $2,300. The bullish resolution requires the crowd to survive long enough for spot demand (staking treasuries, the still-positive $203 million 7-day ETH ETF flow) to lift price above $2,450, at which point trapped shorts are too few to matter. The most informative single indicator from here is the Binance long-account ratio: a drop from 78% into the low 70s on a flat price would mean the crowd de-risked voluntarily — the healthiest possible outcome. A drop that happens with price would mean it was forced.
