ETH ETFs Lose $141M in a Day Yet Weekly Flows Stay Positive at +$203M

Ether spot ETFs had a red Monday — $141.5 million in net redemptions on September 15 — but the more important number is the one that stayed green: the 7-day rolling net flow remains positive at +$203.1 million. On the same day, bitcoin ETFs bled $450.3 million and their weekly flow sank to -$578.4 million. The two largest crypto ETF complexes are now pointed in opposite directions.

News context: Cointelegraph reported the bitcoin fund exodus as the largest since June; the ether complex saw only a fraction of that pressure relative to its size.

Reading the divergence properly

Scale the flows to assets and Monday looks less alarming for ETH than the headline suggests. Ether funds hold $15.4 billion in AUM, so the day's outflow was about 0.9% of assets. Bitcoin funds hold $95.7 billion, and lost 0.5% — but bitcoin's redemptions have now run a full week while ether's week is still net-positive. Since launch, ETH funds have absorbed $13.4 billion in cumulative inflows, and that number made a new high as recently as last week. Institutions de-risking crypto broadly would sell both complexes; what the data actually shows is a BTC-specific reduction.

The staking-yield floor under ETH demand

One structural reason the ether bid is stickier: yield. With Cointelegraph reporting treasury firm Bitmine projecting $334 million in annual staking revenue on its ETH holdings, large allocators increasingly treat ETH as a productive asset rather than a pure beta trade. ETH spot itself trades at $2,386, down 0.9% in 24 hours, with a derivatives market that leans heavily long — 71% of perp accounts — so the ETF flow line is currently the steadier of the two demand signals.

What would change the call

Our read: the divergence favors ETH on a relative basis while both assets chop through September lows. The signal to monitor is the ETH 7-day flow: it has held above zero through this entire drawdown, and a flip negative would remove the main plank of the relative-strength case. Conversely, if BTC's weekly flow stabilizes while ETH's stays positive, the historical pattern points to a broad crypto bounce with ETH outperforming in the first leg. A second consecutive $100M+ ETH redemption day would be the early warning; absent that, dips into the $2,346–$2,364 liquidation zone remain accumulation territory for allocators tracking these flows.
