ETH Squeeze Fades: Shorts Paid 65% of $48M, Price $2,460

ETH Shorts Paid the Bill, Price Did Not Move
ETH saw $48.0 million in liquidations over the past 24 hours, and 64.6% of that hit the short side. Shorts covering usually pushes the price up, yet ETH sits at $2,460 with a 24-hour change of just +0.46%. The squeeze did clear out leveraged shorts, but it failed to carry the price anywhere meaningful.
A Failed Push Toward $2,490
ETH tried to run toward $2,490 during the day but got rejected. Binance and OKX both show a 24-hour high around $2,490 with the low at $2,436. The biggest single liquidation was a $5.02 million short on Binance at $2,533.7, wiped when the earlier rally peaked. Since then, longs also got caught on the pullback, with a 5,000-ETH long worth $1.23 million cleared on OKX at $2,456. A separate 5,000-ETH short on the same venue, also around $1.23 million, was flushed earlier in the session, roughly 12 hours before the long got taken out. Both sides of the book have now been punished inside a narrow band, which is the signature of chop, not a directional breakout.
Open Interest Barely Budged
Total ETH open interest stands at $24.95 billion, up just 0.88% in 24 hours. Binance added 1.06%, OKX 2.6%, while Bitget trimmed 1.03%. Leverage is not flooding back in after the flush. That is the tell: a real squeeze normally draws fresh leveraged longs, and here the market is staying quiet.
Funding Near Zero: No Conviction Either Way
Funding rates are essentially flat. Binance sits at 0.0054% per 8 hours, OKX at 0.0091%, Gate at 0.0035%. The only outlier is WhiteBIT at 0.049%, a thin venue that does not move the tape. Nobody is paying a premium to hold either side. With funding this cold and open interest flat, the $48 million in short liquidations looks like a one-off cleanup, not the start of a larger move. ETH needs a catalyst, not just a squeeze, to break out of this range, and until volume picks up the $2,436 to $2,490 band is the level to watch.
