Filecoin OI Jumps 16.5% as Exchange Positioning Pulls Apart

Filecoin is trading at $1.2343 after a 10.9% move, while open interest has climbed 16.5% in 24 hours to $207.7M. That combination looks bullish at first glance, but the positioning is not moving as one block: exchange shares, account bias, taker flow and liquidations are sending different signals.
A report says Filecoin is nearing the end of its vesting schedule, a backdrop that could sharpen attention on future supply. The derivatives data, however, shows that the immediate issue is positioning divergence rather than a uniform directional bet.
OI is concentrated, but growth is uneven
Binance remains the largest venue, carrying $71.3M of FIL open interest, or 34.3% of the tracked total, after a 16.6% daily increase. Gate is next at $40.5M and 19.5% share, with OI up 16.7%. Bybit holds $21.9M, or 10.5%, but its 34.6% daily expansion is the fastest among the major venues listed. OKX accounts for $20.5M, or 9.9%, after a more moderate 10.6% rise.
This split matters because the market’s additional leverage is not being added evenly. Bybit’s 12.4% four-hour increase and Gate’s 13.3% jump suggest more aggressive short-term positioning there, while Binance’s four-hour rise is 7.2% and OKX’s is 2.3%. The largest venue therefore provides stability to the aggregate, but the marginal risk is building faster on smaller shares.
Funding is broadly positive, with clear venue gaps
The average eight-hour funding rate is 0.009941%, consistent with longs paying to maintain exposure. Binance, Bybit, OKX and several other venues show 0.010%, while Gate is lower at 0.0061% and Hyperliquid is only 0.00125%. Coinbase is the outlier at 0.0746%, whereas CoinEx is negative at -0.006252%.
That dispersion weakens the case for a clean, market-wide long squeeze setup. Most venues are charging longs, but the negative reading on CoinEx and low rates on Gate and Hyperliquid show that leverage costs are not synchronized. The negative basis of -0.0325%, equivalent to -11.8% annualized, adds another layer of caution: perpetual demand is positive, yet the broader futures curve is still discounted.
Accounts lean long, but liquidation pressure is contested
The aggregate long/short ratio shows 65.7% of accounts long versus 34.3% short, close to the 65.0% long share among takers. Venue-level account data is even more one-sided on Binance, where 68.5% are long, compared with 64.4% on OKX, 66.7% on Bybit and 64.2% on Gate.
Yet active flow does not fully confirm that account bias. Binance takers are 58.2% long, materially below its account-long share, while Gate takers are 88.3% long against 64.2% long accounts. This is the clearest positioning divergence: Binance’s larger pool is leaning long by account count but has more balanced recent execution, while Gate shows concentrated aggressive buying.
The liquidation windows reinforce the mixed picture. Over four hours, short liquidations reached $760.7K against $245.1K of long liquidations. Over 12 hours, shorts accounted for $1.1M versus $292.8K for longs. But the 24-hour totals nearly balance at $1.1M shorts and $1.0M longs, while the latest one-hour window is also close at $7.9K shorts and $7.4K longs. The market has recently punished shorts more heavily, but not enough to prove a one-way squeeze.
Verdict
FIL’s immediate bias is constructive but fragile: rising OI and short-heavy recent liquidations favor continuation, while negative basis, uneven funding and Binance taker flow argue against treating the move as fully confirmed. The key upside level is $1.2356, where a reported $64.3K short liquidation occurred; the key downside reference is $1.1921, followed by the larger long-liquidation cluster near $1.0821. A sustained move above $1.2356 with OI expanding beyond the current $207.7M would invalidate this divergence warning and confirm stronger long-led continuation. Failure to hold $1.1921 while OI remains elevated would instead expose the crowded account-long side.
