Gold Perp OI +28% to $1.33B as XAU Slides to $4,332

Gold perps slide 3% while open interest jumps 28%

XAU perpetuals traded at $4,332 on Binance at the time of writing, down 2.98% from the 24-hour high of $4,466. OKX showed the same picture at $4,333, off 2.96%. A 3% drop in the underlying is not unusual for gold in a risk-off week, but the derivatives book stands out: total open interest across venues climbed 28.45% to $1.33 billion in 24 hours. Traders are not fleeing gold. They are adding positions into the pullback.

Gate and MEXC lead the OI build

The leverage is spreading unevenly. Gate holds the largest slice at 34.2% of total OI, about $454 million, up 29.45% in a day. MEXC follows with $337 million, a 25% increase and a 25.4% share. OKX added 31.15% to reach $187 million, and WhiteBit jumped 44.97% to $148 million. Even the 4-hour changes stay positive, with Gate up 7.26% and Bitget up 6.68%, meaning new money kept flowing in after the initial drop instead of fading out.

Funding stays positive, longs keep paying

Funding rates across ten venues averaged 0.0285% per cycle, or 0.031% on an OI-weighted basis. Binance sits at 0.0356%, MEXC at 0.0355%, Bitget at 0.0422%. Longs are paying shorts to hold, and they are doing it while the mark price falls. That is not a panic unwind. For comparison, tokenized gold PAXG held its OI nearly flat at $194 million with price near $4,335, so the surge is specific to leveraged XAU trading rather than a broad rush into gold products.

What to watch next

Two readings are possible. Dip buyers could be positioning for a rebound, treating the slide from $4,466 as an overextended correction. The other side: a crowded long book above a falling price usually ends in a flush, and $4,320 is the near-term floor to watch. If OI keeps climbing into the next funding settlement at 08:00 UTC while price stays below $4,350, the risk tilts toward long liquidation pressure. Either way, the 28% OI expansion means the next gold move will be sharper than the spot tape suggests.
