Morpho Is the Rare Net-Short Book: 37.9% of Binance Accounts Long as OI Jumps 6.7%

Scan the perp positioning of every liquid altcoin today and one name breaks the pattern. While SUI's account crowd is 78% long, LTC's 71% and ONDO's 69%, Morpho's is net short: just 47.5% of accounts hold longs across venues, and on Binance the reading drops to 37.9% - nearly two bearish accounts for every bullish one. MORPHO itself is barely moving, off 0.7% at $2.08 on a day the sector bled, while open interest jumped 6.7% to $45.9 million.

News context: The Block reported that Zama is expanding its confidential lending lineup built on Morpho after its first vault crossed $40 million in deposits, alongside a private-swaps launch on Ethereum - fresh protocol traction behind the token's relative stability.

Shorts are building, but nobody is winning yet

The 6.7% open interest expansion on a flat price means new positions are being added on both sides in balance - and given the account skew, the marginal build leans short. Binance dominates the book at $11.9 million (a 25.8% share, up 1.3% on the day), with Bybit at $6.6 million and OKX at $2.3 million. The liquidation tape shows who has actually paid so far: $97K of longs were wiped over 24 hours and precisely zero shorts - not a single short liquidation in any window. The largest prints were longs at $2.021 on Bybit and $2.030 on Binance, defining the support shelf just 2-3% below the market.

Funding splits down the middle

The carry picture mirrors the two-sided book. Binance longs pay a modest 0.0036% per 8 hours while Bybit shorts pay 0.0071% and Gate shorts pay 0.0103%, with 4 of 17 tracked venues negative. Nobody holds a decisive carry edge. Taker flow leans firmly to the sell side at 34.9% buys, consistent with the short crowd pressing - yet the price refuses to break, which is the detail that should worry the bears. An asset that will not go down on 65% sell-side aggression is absorbing the flow somewhere.

Momentum is soft, structure is intact

The 4-hour RSI at 33.3 and daily at 38.6 both lean oversold-adjacent, unusual for a token only 0.7% down - a residue of the prior week's decline rather than today's action.

Our read: MORPHO is set up as the contrarian squeeze candidate of this list. A net-short account base, zero short liquidations to date, rising open interest and a price that absorbs constant sell-side taker pressure is the mirror image of the crowded-long traps elsewhere on the board - here it is the shorts who have not yet been tested. The trigger is $2.10: a push through it starts collecting short margin in a book where 62% of Binance accounts need to buy to exit, with little overhead supply from trapped longs. The bear case needs a decisive break of the $2.02-$2.03 liquidation shelf, which would finally hand the short crowd its payoff and open the slide toward $1.90. With protocol deposits growing per the Zama expansion, fading this token at $2.08 looks like the crowded side of the trade for the first time in weeks.
