ZEC Short Whale Down $22.8M: 90.7% Win Rate, Still Holding

One short position, a $22.8M hole

ZEC has roughly doubled since this trade was opened, and one Hyperliquid wallet has sat on the wrong side for the whole ride. On-chain data shows 39,759.57 ZEC shorted at an average entry of $576.30, and the paper loss on that position now stands at about $22.8 million. The coin trades near $1,151 on Binance and OKX at the time of writing, down roughly 2% on the day after touching a $1,258 intraday high. At that peak, the same short was more than $27 million underwater.

A 90.7% win rate meets its worst trade

The trader behind the position is not an anonymous gambler. His Hyperliquid account shows 175 winners out of 193 closed trades, a 90.7% win rate, with $11.8 million in realized profit across a trading history that focuses on BTC, ZEC and UNI. This single short has erased more than the total realized gains from those 193 trades. It is a useful reminder that a high win rate does not protect an oversized position when a coin trends hard against it.

Why the short is still alive

The position runs on 3x cross leverage with about $15.2 million in margin locked in. The liquidation price sits at $2,540.31, which means ZEC would need to climb roughly 121% from current levels to force a close. Funding tells part of the story too. Rates stayed positive and hit the 0.01% cap on Binance, Bybit, Gate and Bitget even while the coin cooled off, so the crowd of longs keeps paying shorts each cycle instead of bailing out.

What the standoff says about ZEC perps

Open interest is easing from the squeeze. Total ZEC perp OI is about $2.39 billion, down 5.1% in 24 hours, with Binance holding a 27.3% share and trimming 3.4%. Yet liquidation data still favors the short side of the ledger: shorts paid $12.8 million of the $21.8 million in ZEC liquidations over the past day, about 59%. The setup is a coiled one. A whale with this much margin can wait out rallies that would break most traders, and the capped funding shows leveraged longs are still unwilling to fold. Watch the $2,540 liquidation line and funding direction for the next signal, because a break of this standoff in either direction is likely to be violent.
