ETH Futures Slip Into Backwardation at -2.4% Annualized — Milder Than BTC's -10.5%

Ethereum futures have joined bitcoin in backwardation, but only just. ETH perps and futures are pricing an annualized basis of roughly -2.4% against spot at $2,386, while BTC's basis has collapsed to about -10.5% annualized. Both markets are stressed; the stress is not evenly distributed.
News context: Cointelegraph linked the leg lower across crypto to global bond yields at multidecade highs — the macro pressure that pushed both curves below spot.
Why the 8-point gap matters
Basis is the cleanest read on institutional hedging pressure. BTC's deeply negative print reflects heavy shorting of futures against spot inventory — consistent with the $450.3 million that left bitcoin ETFs on Sept 15 and a weekly ETF flow of -$578.4 million. ETH's much shallower discount, alongside a still-positive +$203.1 million weekly ETF flow, says institutions are not hedging ether with anything like the same urgency. When the two curves diverge this widely, the asset with the milder backwardation typically outperforms on the next relief bounce, because it carries less short-futures overhang that needs unwinding.
The rest of ETH's derivatives stack is calm, not capitulating
ETH open interest is $23.9 billion, down only 0.3% in 24 hours despite $166.1 million in liquidations that fell 77% on longs. Funding is barely positive — 0.0006% per 8 hours on Binance — and the daily RSI at 49.6 is dead neutral, though the 4-hour at 35.0 leans oversold. Nothing in that mix looks like panic; it looks like a market marking time at the low end of its range at $2,386 while the leverage that mispriced the range gets removed at $2,346–$2,364, where the day's largest forced exits printed.
The relative-value conclusion
Our read: the basis gap is a relative-strength signal for ETH against BTC over the coming weeks. The pattern to watch is convergence direction. If BTC's basis normalizes upward toward ETH's — hedges unwinding — both assets likely rally and the trade is simply long exposure. If instead ETH's basis deteriorates toward BTC's, it would mean hedging pressure is spreading and the whole complex has another leg of de-risking ahead; in that case the $2,346 liquidation floor is unlikely to hold. As of now the first scenario has the flow evidence behind it: ETH's ETF bid is intact, its curve is barely inverted, and its funding is free. Backwardation this shallow resolves quickly — expect this signal to pick a direction within days, not weeks.
