MSTR Perp Rally to $143.6: OI +19.9%, Funding Near Zero

MSTR Perps Surge 15.7% as Bitcoin Reclaims $81K

MSTR perpetual contracts on major venues traded at $143.6 at the snapshot, up 15.7% over 24 hours. Binance and OKX quotes lined up almost to the tick: Binance showed $143.60 with a 15.72% change, OKX showed $143.61 with 15.80%, and OKX's own API recorded a 24-hour range of $122.74 to $145.85. The move tracks MicroStrategy's well-known sensitivity to Bitcoin, which pushed back above $81,000 during the same window after testing $76,200 a day earlier.

The rally also marks a full reversal of the early-week setup. On September 2, MSTR perps were sliding toward $122 with leverage exiting. Now the price sits 17% above that low and the contract structure has turned visibly more crowded.

Open Interest Jumps 19.9% to $68.8M: Where New Money Went

Total open interest across 11 venues rose 19.9% in 24 hours to $68.8 million, per the aggregate snapshot. Bitget holds the largest share at 27.2% with OI up 17.4%, followed by WhiteBIT at 20.8% with a 26.7% gain. OKX and Bybit each added roughly 14-19%, and Coinbase, KuCoin and Lighter all grew between 11% and 36%. The increases are spread across exchanges rather than concentrated on one venue, which points to fresh directional positioning instead of a single-market squeeze.

Four-hour changes are mostly flat to slightly negative on the biggest venues, meaning the bulk of the buildup happened in the last day rather than in the final hours before this snapshot.

Funding Stays Near Zero While Price Runs

Despite the 15.7% jump, funding rates remain unusually quiet. The volume-weighted funding rate is about 0.0034%, and the exchange average is roughly 0.0025%. Bybit, Bitget and Gate show rates near zero, KuCoin and WhiteBIT are at 0.01%, and only Paradex and Lighter print slightly above 0.005%. Nothing on the board suggests longs are paying a meaningful premium to hold positions.

That combination, price up hard with funding flat, is typically a sign the rally is being driven by spot or aggressive market buying rather than crowded leveraged longs. It also means the squeeze fuel for a further short-covering leg is limited, since shorts have already been forced out in size.

What to Watch Next

Two things matter from here. First, whether OI keeps climbing on a pause in price, which would imply new longs building at higher levels and raise the risk of a long-side flush if BTC rolls over. Second, funding is the tell: a jump above 0.05% would mean leveraged buyers are chasing, while staying near zero keeps the move healthier. For traders, the practical read is that MSTR perps are now a high-beta BTC proxy again, and the funding data says the market is not yet crowded on the long side.

Data as of 12:40 Beijing time September 4, covering Binance, OKX, Bybit, Gate, Bitget, WhiteBIT, KuCoin, Coinbase, Hyperliquid and other major venues.
